Officer Safety and Communication Spanish

The rapid influx of Latinos into the United States has resulted in increasing numbers of encounters between law enforcement officers and individuals whose native language is Spanish. Law enforcement officers with little or no knowledge of the Spanish language and culture are at a disadvantage in these encounters. Officials may react inappropriately when they cannot understand what is being said and they are unable to gather information, offer assistance or give commands when necessary.

Officer Safety and Communication Spanish is a 3-day program designed to acquaint law enforcement personnel with the rules of Spanish pronunciation, street/slang Spanish, arrest expressions, commands, cultural information, and give them techniques for gathering basic information from witnesses, victims and suspects. The focus of this program is on street Spanish, not verb conjugation and Castellan Spanish.
