COURSE DESCRIPTION: Communication Excellence in Law Enforcement is designed for all law enforcement professionals. Successful completion of this training has been beneficial to officers in every area and level of police work. Course instruction focuses on the role of effective verbal skills in achieving law enforcement objectives. Participants will identify the necessary skills for developing verbal excellence and learn how to practice strategic interaction to facilitate voluntary compliance. Police Departments CANNOT afford to have officers, who CANNOT communicate with professionalism. Participants will develop an appreciation of the power of words to enhance law enforcement professionalism; diffuse hostile behavior; counsel victims interview suspects and witnesses; and facilitate voluntary compliance. The objectives for the course are to enhance the professionalism and personal effectiveness of each participant; Reduce problems, stress, and costs associated with verbal mistakes; and identify the central principles of dealing with difficult people. At the conclusion of this training, participants will know the secrets of power, compliance, and motivation; ancient principles of persuasion; how to confront verbal deception and encourage honest relationships; how to assess verbal strengths; how to develop communication plans for any difficult situation best handled with words; and critical verbal skills to enhance effectiveness and professionalism when communicating.
INSTRUCTOR'S BIO: Brian J. Polansky, Ph.D
Dr. Polansky is "Law Enforcement’s Communication Professor," and an award-winning educator, speaker, author, and creator of education programs designed to encourage professional success through communication excellence. After completing a Doctorate in Communication Studies at the University of Kansas, Dr. Polansky joined the faculty of the University of Arkansas-Little Rock as professor. He has provided communication education and curriculum development to law enforcement agencies including the F.B.I. National Academy, U.S. Attorney’s Office, International Association of Police Chiefs, Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, and police academies and leadership schools throughout the U.S. Dr. Polansky is president of Polansky & Associates and presents continuing education seminars to a wide variety of professionals in law enforcement, corporate business, finance, health care, education, corporate security, and government service.
