Confidential informants can provide valuable information for law enforcement, but they must be carefully selected and managed. This 7-hour course is designed to assist law enforcement officers in identifying potential informants, and successfully recruiting, developing, and utilizing them.  Recognizing the motives of confidential informants will help officers select and develop the most effective informants. Legal issues regarding the use of confidential informants as well as the differences between confidential informants and cooperating witnesses will be addressed. Methods for documenting informant activities and for maintaining the safety of informants will be stressed. Attendees will also learn to anticipate and minimize common problems with the use of informants.
