Drugs and Rock-n-Roll examines the cultural and practical relationships between Rock-n-Roll and drug misuse. This course will look at the genesis of the Rock-n-Roll music genre and how those early influences led to the cultural adoption of the drug/Rock-n-Roll lifestyle. Students will hear, and see, numerous examples of drug-influenced music and lyrical references from 1920’s blues, through the transition of the 1950’s and 60’s, to the Rap/Hip-Hop era. This 6-hour block of Rock-n-Roll social and historical instruction includes a comparison of how rock music influences perceptions and whether those perceptions could be either true or misunderstood. This is a fun, lighthearted look at the immense influence rock music continues to have on our drug culture.
