Duty to Intervene and Post Custody Care-Train the Trainer
Well-trained law enforcement officers is vital to controlling crisis situations. Recent images seen in the media have sparked citizen concerns with an officer’s duty to intervene when excessive force is used to control volatile police encounters. Because of this concern, agencies are developing policies and implementing new procedures to help alleviate potential issues with intervention and post custody care. The focus of such policies should describe when an officer should intervene, when improper force is being used, how these incidents should be reported, and how they should be documented. Post custody care procedures will also be discussed to ensure officers are trained in recognizing the need for medical attention by proper personnel, with minimal delay if needed. This course will prepare students with the knowledge needed to effectively teach this course to fellow officers.
