Human Trafficking Awareness Online

The U. S. Department of State estimates that over 14,000 victims are trafficked into the U.S. annually; more than half of these victims are children. This course will define human trafficking, distinguish between trafficking and smuggling, and review the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 as well as the Arkansas Trafficking Statutes. Victims of trafficking are largely hidden from sight by the nature of their condition, which leads to victims being overlooked when they appear in plain sight. Raising awareness of this hidden problem is a key element for training. This training will describe a victim profile and tactics used for scouting and recruiting victims as well as provide indicators that a person is a victim of trafficking. The course also includes a description of how a victim accepts the lifestyle of a sexually trafficked person. Traffickers will be described using case examples. Officers will also learn how to identify victims and respond to them with a trauma-informed approach. The course concludes with information on assistance available and resources for domestic as well as international victims.
