Internal Affairs Investigations Done the Right Way

Criminal justice agencies are charged with the responsibilities of providing community service, protecting the public, interacting with schools, civic groups, community leaders, and other criminal justice agencies, as well as performing daily law enforcement duties. Employees of criminal justice organizations, both sworn and civil, must behave responsibly, ethically, and professionally with the public. Sometimes this doesn’t happen. Some employees may commit actions that can publicly tarnish the image of the agency. When not handled appropriately, agencies lose effectiveness in their desire to provide professional customer service to the community. Criminal justice leaders have the authority and the responsibility to preserve order and discipline within their organizations and to ensure the public’s concerns are addressed when complaints of inappropriate behavior by employees are reported.

Participants in this course will be guided through the following:

1) the necessity of internal affairs investigations
2) receiving and documenting complaints against criminal justice employees
3) types of investigations
4) investigating internal and criminal concurrent investigations
5) interviewing the principle subject(s)
6) collecting evidence for the investigation
7) employee rights
8) completing the comprehensive report
