In today’s investigations, data can make or break a case. From call logs and cell phone dumps to financial records and digital returns, officers are often working with large amounts of information that need to be sorted, understood, and clearly presented.

To help meet that need, we are offering a new course: Basic Excel for Law Enforcement, taking place May 4 at the Criminal Justice Institute.

This class is built specifically with law enforcement in mind. It focuses on how Excel can be used as a practical investigative tool—not just for organizing data, but for turning it into something useful. Whether you’re trying to establish timelines, track patterns, connect individuals, or make sense of multiple data sources, Excel can help you get there faster and with more clarity.

In this one-day, hands-on course, you’ll learn how to:

  • Import and clean up raw data from different sources
  • Organize information in a way that supports your case
  • Identify key details, trends, and connections
  • Turn complex datasets into something easy to understand and explain

The goal is simple: help you work smarter with the information you already have, strengthen your cases, and improve how you present your findings.

No prior Excel experience is needed—this course is perfect for anyone who wants to feel more confident handling investigative data.

Participants should bring a laptop with Excel (or a similar spreadsheet program) already installed.
