DWI Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Traffic Occupant Protection and Drugged Driving

DWI Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) 24 hours.  This is a three-day training course that trains and certifies law enforcement officers to evaluate and administer the three-part standardized field sobriety test (SFST). The training follows the nationally standardized SFST curriculum developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Participants for this course must be law enforcement officers employed under the direct control of a public criminal justice agency.

Traffic Occupant Protection Strategies (TOPS) 4 hours. This is a four-hour course that teaches law enforcement officers about the safety of vehicle drivers and occupants through the use of seat belts, child safety seats, and supplemental restraint systems. Participants for this course must be law enforcement officers responsible for traffic enforcement, public safety education, and those actively involved with Selective Traffic Enforcement Programs (STEP).

Drugged Driving (DD) 4 hours. This is a four-hour course that educates law enforcement officers in identifying drivers who may be impaired by a substance other than alcohol. This course will not qualify law enforcement officers to perform functions of a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). Participants for this course must be law enforcement officers employed under the direct control of a public criminal justice agency.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Students should be actively involved in DWI enforcement and prepared to utilize all aspects of the training, especially standardized field sobriety tests, during the course of their work. The officers selected to attend this training should be aware of the hazards caused by impaired drivers, be motivated to arrest those drivers and their duty assignments should enable them to spend the time required to process DWI offenders. New police recruits could also participate in this course upon approval of their agency.
