Artificial Intelligence and Law Enforcement
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the intersection between artificial intelligence and law enforcement. Information will be presented on emerging AI applications such as facial recognition, predictive analytics, natural language processing, automated monitoring systems, and data-driven decision-making tools. The course emphasizes real-world use cases alongside ethical, legal, and social considerations, including bias in algorithms, privacy rights, proportionality in surveillance, and implications for civil liberties.
Through case studies, policy reviews, and hands-on discussions, participants will gain critical insights into how AI is both shaping and being shaped by law enforcement practices globally. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to evaluate the promise of AI for improving public safety while safeguarding democratic accountability, transparency, and justice. Students will also participate in a group practical exercise utilizing AI tools to build a strategic plan for a law enforcement topic provided by the instructor. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to class for practical exercises.
