The Criminal Justice Institute is now accepting applications for the Drug Recognition Expert Instructor Development Course. Potential candidates will need to complete an application packet and return it by December 20, 2021. This certification course will be 40 classroom hours. The Candidate trains and certifies to become an instructor of the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program (DECP). This course certifies the candidate to teach Drug Recognition Expert School, Drug Recognition Expert Instructor Development, Drug Recognition Expert Refresher, and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE).

Lodging and Travel:

For students traveling more than 50 miles to the training venue, lodging will be provided and all meals and mileage (personal vehicles only) will be reimbursed, if not provided.  Any reimbursement will be at the state per diem rate.


Candidates must have the following:

  • Completed at least 25 Evaluations
  • Completed an Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) Class
  • Current Instructor Development Certification
  • Current SFST Instructor Certification
  • At least one DRE Recertification

Course will also require (within 12 months of class):

The candidate to instruct 8 hours in the classroom of a DECP drug recognition training program (DRE School), as well as oversee four DRE Candidate Evaluations. It is highly recommended that the DRE Instructor Candidate be available to teach most of the next DRE School.
