The Criminal Justice Institute is now accepting applications for the Drug Recognition Expert Instructor Development Course. Potential candidates will need to complete an application packet and return it by April 3, 2020. This certification course will be 40 classroom hours. The Candidate trains and certifies to become an instructor of the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program (DECP). This course certifies the candidate to teach Drug Recognition Expert School, Drug Recognition Expert Instructor Development, Drug Recognition Expert Refresher, and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE).


This course will be held at the Criminal Justice Institute located at 26 Corporate Hill Drive, Little Rock, AR 72205, April 27 through May 1, 2020 (8 am through 5pm or possibly later). Lodging and Travel:

For students traveling more than 50 miles to the training venue, lodging will be provided and all meals and mileage (personal vehicles only) will be reimbursed, if not provided.  Any reimbursement will be at the state per diem rate.


Candidates must have the following:

  • Completed at least 25 Evaluations (not including original certification)
  • Completed an Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) Class
  • Current Instructor Development Certification through CLEST
  • Current SFST Instructor Certification through CLEST
  • At least one DRE Recertification

Course will also require (within 12 months of class):

The candidate to instruct 8 hours in the classroom of a DECP drug recognition training program (DRE School), as well as oversee four DRE Candidate Evaluations. It is highly recommended that the DRE Instructor Candidate be available to teach most of the next DRE School.  That school will be held in Russellville at ATU June 1-5, 9-12, & 18-19, 2020.  Lodging and travel will be provided for this at the state per diem rates as well.
