The Criminal Justice Institute offers no-cost online sexual assault training to law enforcement executives and investigators in eligible rural areas nationwide.

These victim-centered courses are designed to enable rural executives and investigators to better understand the impact of trauma upon sexual assault victims as well as apprehend the offender. The courses promote a team approach in responding to sexual assaults, which prioritizes the safety and well-being of the victim beginning with the first responding officer.

The following online courses are available through this program:


Foundations of Sexual Assault Investigation for the Rural Officer Online
This 10-hour course provides rural law enforcement executives and investigators with the knowledge, skills, and resources for establishing a victim-centered response as part of an effective investigation. Topics include the dynamics of sexual assault, first responder, evidence collection techniques, and a prosecutor’s perspective.


Sexual Assault Investigation for the Rural Executive Online
Rural law enforcement executives have the opportunity to have a significant influence on those they supervise and on their community’s attitude toward sexual assault. They are responsible for creating and maintaining an environment that supports a victim-centered response to sexual assault. This 8-hour course will enhance the capability of rural law enforcement personnel to manage and investigate sexual assault cases in their community.

Topics include the benefits of a team approach to sexual assault investigation, creating a department sexual assault policy and procedure along with self-assessment tools, and handling media relations. Obstacles, resources, and benefits to the department will also be explored.

NOTE: A prerequisite for this course is Foundations of Sexual Assault Investigation for the Rural Officer Online.


Sexual Assault Investigation for the Rural Investigator Online
The response to, and investigation of, sexual assault crimes requires a victim-centered approach as part of an effective investigation. This 13-hour course is designed to enable rural officers to better understand the impact of sexual assault upon victims as well as apprehend the offender.

Topics include medical forensic examination, alcohol/drug facilitated sexual assault, victim interview, suspect interview and interrogation, and sexual assault report writing.

NOTE: A prerequisite for this course is Foundations of Sexual Assault Investigation for the Rural Officer Online.


CJI’s Sexual Assault Training for Rural Law Enforcement Project is funded by the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), U. S. Department of Justice (USDOJ). These courses are federal grant-funded and are specifically for rural states and all territories. Also included are rural areas as defined by The Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP).
