New Class! Failures in Criminal Investigation

Mistakes in casework don’t just impact investigators — they can cost victims justice and compromise public trust in the profession.

Failures in Criminal Investigation is an 8-hour course designed to help criminal investigators recognize and avoid the most common — and most costly — investigative errors before they occur.

This class is coming to the Criminal Justice Institute on October 8.

Drawing from interviews with hundreds of veteran investigators across the United States and Canada, as well as insights from seasoned prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges, this course takes an honest look at investigative missteps that often derail otherwise solid cases. Whether caused by oversight, complacency, or inexperience, these failures are aggressively exploited by defense attorneys and can lead to the suppression of evidence, reduced charges, or complete dismissal of cases.

Through case studies, interactive discussion, and practical strategies, investigators will learn how to safeguard their work product, strengthen their partnerships with prosecutors, and ultimately deliver justice for victims and their families.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Most frequent investigative errors — and how to prevent them
  • Improving documentation, scene integrity, and follow-up practices
  • Working effectively with prosecutors and anticipating defense strategies
  • Interview and interrogation missteps that compromise credibility
  • Pitfalls in courtroom testimony and how to prepare for trial
  • Recognition and avoidance of complacency in long-term investigations

Course Objective:

By the end of this training, participants will be equipped with the tools and awareness needed to conduct more thorough, defensible investigations — ensuring successful prosecution and protecting the integrity of the investigative process.
